The summer school will serve to bring in prospective entry level Computer/Cluster/Network Systems managers to fill the laboratory needs in this area. The hope is that a few top students will be chosen from this program to intern at the lab in systems/network management positions in Lab oranizations such as High Performance Computingr; Computing, Communications, and Networking; and others.
The Information Science and Technology Institutes (ISTI) and the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) are soliciting undergraduate student applicants for their Summer Institute. During the eight-week Institute, employed students will receive technical training/lectures, professional development seminars, and laboratory experience with LANL staff and external mentors. A hands-on computer system laboratory/ machine room fully populated with unassembled computer nodes, networking equipment, and assorted equipment, cables, and supplies will be provided. Practical skill development in setting up, configuring, administering, testing, monitoring, and scheduling computer systems, supercomputer clusters, and computer networks will be emphasized. In addition, technical breadth will be developed via exposure to a variety of key topics, technologies, and problems of interest through participation in tutorials, seminars, and facility tours prepared by the faculty coordinators and LANL mentors, computer professionals, and scientists. Within the Institute, students will work in small project teams and will present their work in a technical forum.
This highly-selective program is designed for 12 third year (i.e., Junior) undergraduate students from NM (IAS) schools, although in some cases, Senior applicants may be considered. Attempts will be made to identify high quality students from diverse backgrounds. Acceptance into the program will be based on academic record, interest and goal statement, and letters of recommendation. As a general guideline, students should have sufficient academic achievement to make them eligible graduate school candidates upon completion of their undergraduate program. CS and EE/CE students from UNM, NMSU, and NM Tech are encouraged to apply. This program is limited to US citizens.
Salaries will range from approximately $15-19/hr, depending upon academic standing. A relocation allowance is also provided for travel to and from Los Alamos.
We anticipate being able to offer housing for accepted students. The current housing website address is provided for your review; however, the Housing Office is in the process of renegotiating the contracts for 2007. Rates are subject to change. http://financial.lanl.gov/housing/default.shtml
The school program will last 8 weeks from mid June to early August, 2008. The summer school will be held at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in Los Alamos, NM at the National Security Education Center (NSEC).
Dr. Andree Jacobson, Senior Lecture from the University of New Mexico Computer Science Department will be conducting the lectures.
